Hoedemaker Pfeiffer
Seattle, WA
Hoedemaker Pfeiffer is a design studio focused on the creation of space that reveals the human spirit and connects us to the world in which we live.
Through the interweaving of architecture, interiors, and landscape, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer strives to reveal what is essential in the human experience. They look to create layers of meaning that tell the stories of people and place through the experience of space and materials. Rooted in residential design, often for family retreats, they embrace a passion for what is too often taken for granted—small moments, family, and shared memories that make life’s journey meaningful. This same attitude infuses the firm’s work with bespoke commercial and lifestyle projects. Recognized with numerous awards and featured in dozens of publications, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer has garnered a reputation for their honest use of materials, and sympathetic response to nature and site. They seek to merge contemporary design with timeless traditions meant to last generations.

“It’s always a careful consideration of how the object feels in the hand, it’s haptic experience. This is a part of the architecture that the inhabitant physically touches on a daily basis. We always consider contour, door size, hand size, weight, and material. In general, our bodies are organic and rounded, so it feels more natural to grasp an object that is also round. If a warmer, softer feel is desired, we consider a wood lever to bring in that experience. We love Sun Valley Bronze because of the rich haptic experience of their products, their beauty, their material quality, and the lovely patina that forms, highlighting the passage of time and life within a building.”

HP has been specifying Sun Valley Bronze for many years for their timeless design and ethos of quality craftsmanship. We love how their hardware feels in the hand, its subtle beauty, and the sturdiness it brings to elements in motion. Given our alignment in values, it only made sense to curate a collection of our favorite hardware pieces to share with our clients, followers, and greater design community.
-
Hardware is the moment where most of us actually touch the buildings we inhabit. They take the physical force of our presence and provide a haptic experience. HP seeks to make that connection feel purposeful and pleasing. These haptic moments, compounded over time will develop a beautiful patina and a muscle memory in the user, a record of our physical connection to a building. With this wear and patina, we can also be assured that the quality of Sun Valley Bronze hardware is such that it will function as well in year 1 as in year 20 and beyond.
-
Material, contour, mass, size and proportion of the element hardware is being added to, client behavior and preference, cost, and most importantly and simply “how it looks, feels, & sounds.” We love to have full, physical samples in the office to let our clients touch and feel these elements as much as possible before specifying them. That ‘ka-thunk’ of good door hardware brings such satisfaction.
-
Consider the fact that hardware will be used repeatedly on a daily basis. This will help to inform how the quality and “feel” of that hardware applies to what we’re willing to budget for it.
Touch and feel the hardware you’re considering as much as possible. We love to have physical samples at the office, but also go find it in use somewhere. Consider if you enjoy interacting with that object. Consider if there are any subtle parts of its design that are particularly pleasing or displeasing.
